Loose-fill asbestos assistance package for NSW residents welcome
19 December 2014
An announcement today by the NSW Government to provide assistance to NSW residents impacted as a result of having loose-fill asbestos in their homes has been welcomed by Maurice Blackburn Lawyers.
Head of the firm’s national asbestos practiceTheodora Ahilas said the package was a good first step in working to assist residents identified as having loose-fill asbestos in their homes.
“We welcome that the NSW Government has responded so quickly on this issue, it is a good first step that will help to support residents in NSW concerned about the potential impacts of loose-fill asbestos in their homes,” Ms Ahilas said.
“This measure will allow people to be supported in managing any potential risks, and the announcement of financial support for measures including sealing of cavities and environmental cleaning is particularly welcome.
“Obviously however these measures are just the first step in addressing these issues longer term with the Loose-Fill Asbestos Insulation Taskforce still yet to develop its broader action plan, but this interim response is welcome in ensuring people impacted now have access to immediate assistance.
“Going forward we hope the Government will also be seeking to ensure thorough testing is undertaken across all local government areas impacted to make sure that any residents who may be impacted are identified and advised of any potential risks so these too can be managed,” she said.
