Register for free asbestos testing before time runs out

14 June 2016
Leading asbestos law firm, Maurice Blackburn is urging home-owners in NSW to register for free asbestos contamination testing before time runs out.

The test for loose-fill asbestos insulation in residences built before 1980 is available in 28 local government areas if home-owners register before Monday, 1 August 2016.

The owners of properties that are found to be contaminated have the option of selling their residence and land to the NSW government at market value.

Head of Maurice Blackburn’s asbestos practice, Theodora Ahilas says every eligible home-owner should make sure they register for the free test.

“Testing your home for loose-fill contamination is about protecting the future health of yourself and everyone who spends time in your home.”

“It will also protect the future value of that property, which for most people is the biggest investment they will ever make.”

The NSW government is proposing new laws that will require owners to disclose if their property is contaminated with loose-fill asbestos before they sell the property.

Owners who fail to meet these proposed regulations will likely face legal action and significant financial loss.

“After witnessing at close hand for many years the devastating consequences of asbestos exposure, I urge people to help protect themselves and the community by registering for this test.”
