TRAINEE LAWYER PROGRAM VICTORIA

Gaining entrance to the Trainee Lawyer Program at Maurice Blackburn will see you getting real experience right away. Our Trainee Lawyers acquire well-rounded legal experience early in their career by working across various areas of practice, along with opportunities to participate in social justice cases, sustainability issues, the women’s law section and our cultural diversity working group.

You will work closely with senior lawyers and partners, and other internal and external experts, and be able to build lasting relationships through legal networking events. As a Trainee Lawyer we encourage you to shadow experienced lawyers, attend court and client meetings, and even brief counsel.

Above all, you will be able to experience at first hand, life as a legal professional at one of Australia’s most trustworthy, successful and respected law firm.

The Trainee Lawyer Program

  1. Apply to become a Trainee Lawyer.
  2. Application process and dates are in accordance with Law Institute of Victoria guidelines.
  3. In accordance with the Graduate Recruitment Guidelines, previous clerks and current employees will be eligible to receive a priority offer to commence as a Trainee Lawyer in 2018.  Offers will be made on Tuesday 8th August 2017 and must be accepted or declined by Wednesday 9th August 2017.
  4. Trainee Lawyers will undertake two six-month rotations and are employed on a 12-month contract.
  5. A permanent position as a Lawyer may be offered upon completion of the Trainee Lawyer Program.

The Graduate Lawyer Program

  1. Applications are open to those who have been awarded either an undergraduate or postgraduate Law degree.

    Offers made: Monday 30th October 2017
    Commence as a Graduate Lawyer: February 2018

  2. Graduate Lawyers undertake two six-month rotations and are employed on a twelve month contract.
  3. Along with ongoing feedback, structured learning opportunities include a comprehensive orientation program, presentations on relevant legal, business and workplace issues.
  4. A permanent position as a Lawyer may be offered upon completion of the Graduate Program.

  3. In accordance with the Graduate Recruitment Guidelines, in February/March 2017, previous clerks and current employees will be eligible to receive a priority offer to commence as a Trainee Lawyer in 2018. Priority offer applications open 17th January 2017 and close on 25th January 2017. Offers will be made on Thursday 23rd February 2017.
  4. General market applications will open on Friday 7th August 2017 at 9.00am and close Monday 14th August 2017 at 9:00am.
  5. Offers for Trainee Lawyer positions will be made on Monday 18th September 2017 and must be accepted or declined by 5.00pm on Tuesday 19th September 2017.
  6. Trainee Lawyers will undertake two six-month rotations and are employed on a twelve month contract.
  7. A permanent position as a Lawyer may be offered upon completion of the Trainee Lawyer Program.
  8. Maurice Blackburn is a signatory to the Queensland Law Society guidelines for the recruitment of seasonal clerks and graduates.

The three-week seasonal clerkship program at Maurice Blackburn gives you the opportunity to experience what it’s like to actually walk the talk in Australia’s leading social justice law firm. Applying to become a seasonal clerk at Maurice Blackburn will expose you to some of Australia’s leading legal minds and is the first step in a legal career which will make a genuine difference in people’s lives.

Applications are open to all students in their penultimate year of their law degree. If your application is successful you will complete the 3 week seasonal clerkship program at Maurice Blackburn in November 2017 or June 2018.

How to apply

    c. We only hold one round of interviews and these will be held in the second half of September 2017

JUNIOR LEGAL ASSISTANT PROGRAM

Start your legal career with a highly influential firm.

Our Junior Legal Assistant program has been developed to grow tertiary qualified graduates into highly skilled and knowledgeable Legal Assistants. Our Junior Legal Assistants will have the opportunity to work with senior Legal Assistants as well as a range of Lawyers, Associates and Principals resulting in exciting and rewarding careers in some of Australia’s best practices.

The 12 month program provides a broad range of training designed to familiarise you with all aspects of plaintiff law and litigation practices. The program consists of 2 x 6 month rotations and provides you with the opportunity to develop a thorough understanding of two practice areas. The program encourages active participation and contribution, enabling you to be rewarded with excellent training opportunities, and to provide you with a real sense of accomplishment.
