Elizabeth O’Brien is a medical negligence Associate in Maurice Blackburn’s Sydney office.
A highly educated and qualified medico-legal professional, Elizabeth brings to her cases her previous experience and understanding of the health system, together with a real empathy for those whose experience with that same health system has been difficult or traumatic. She holds a Juris Doctor with first class Honours and a Master of Public Health from UNSW, and a Bachelor of Nursing from RMIT.
Her nursing background includes extensive experience as a Registered Nurse in a major metropolitan hospital as well as in a district nursing role, attending to individuals and families in the community in after hospital care, haematology and oncology, palliative care and aged care.
“After studying for a Master’s of Public Health at UNSW, I worked in health research and served on a national governmental advisory committee on medical and health workforce. It was here that I developed an interest in law. This interest was further stimulated by my volunteer work with an asylum seeker support service,” says Elizabeth.
Elizabeth joined Maurice Blackburn as part of our trainee lawyer program in 2013, working in our medical negligence and dust diseases practice areas. Now working entirely within the field of medical negligence, the skills and experience gained in her earlier roles enhance her legal practice and the expertise she is able to offer to clients.
“Underlying each phase of my career and education has been the desire to help people. As a lawyer, it is this ability to help others that inspires me in my work, along with being a part of a team of people who are all overwhelmingly committed to fair outcomes for individuals and for the wider community.”
