Jacinta Northam is a Senior Associate in Maurice Blackburn's Canberra office with broad experience in personal injury law.
Jacinta provides advice and conducts litigation in personal injuries matters including workers’ compensation, common law, car vehicle accidents, public liability and product liability compensation claims. Her knowledge and experience ensures that her clients' interests are protected and their claims are pursued promptly and efficiently.
Jacinta also has a particular interest in bringing claims for the survivors of childhood sexual abuse. She is specially trained in trauma informed practice which ensures she works with clients to access justice in a way that recognises the complex trauma they have suffered.
Jacinta has called Canberra home for almost two decades, and has spent that time working in the law; first as a paralegal and for the last 11 years as a lawyer. A proud mother of two daughters, Jacinta joined Maurice Blackburn in 2011 because she believes in what we represent as a firm and our values ties in with her desire to fight for what is fair.
“I became a personal injuries lawyer because I had a desire to assist clients, often in stressful situations, to achieve a fair and equitable outcome following injury through no fault of their own,” says Jacinta.
“I find it most rewarding to see my clients’ appreciation and relief in knowing that they have someone to fight for them and they no longer have to battle on their own against insurance companies. It can be challenging to fight for clients’ entitlements in circumstances where they are frequently under significant stress, including psychological impact of injury and financial pressures associated with an inability to work due to their injuries. But it is inspiring to see the immense relief clients feel – knowing that their rights have been protected and their future is more secure.”
As well as assisting many clients to achieve successful compensation claims, Jacinta is part of Maurice Blackburn’s specially-trained team helping people through the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.
Jacinta holds a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Canberra and a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the Australian National University. She was admitted to practice as a barrister and solicitor of the ACT Supreme Court in 2004.
