Walter Hawkins is the Principal and Practice Leader of the Canberra office of Maurice Blackburn Lawyers. He has more than 25 years’ experience specialising in personal injury litigation. Walter has a particular interest in catastrophic injury claims and injury claims from motor vehicle accidents.

“I became a lawyer to make a difference, and I’m proud to say I’ve been able to do that. I have achieved significant multi-million dollar settlements for some clients, and I’m still passionate to achieve positive results in all matters large and small,” says Walter.

Walter is inspired by his clients and works with them to achieve the best outcomes.

“I am mindful of client needs and focussed on achieving positive results. The most rewarding thing about my work is assisting clients in the recovery process following injury.”

Walter is a keen leader, and an advocate for road safety, especially for vulnerable road users such as motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians. He has written submissions and given evidence to Government inquiries on vulnerable road users and has strong community ties. He has also contributed to safety initiatives such as the Sorry Mate I Didn’t See You (SMIDSY) campaign.

“I feel responsible to convey the human cost of injury of victims and their families to commercial institutions and government. The SMIDSY campaign is a popular public forum where I can do this.”

Walter joined Maurice Blackburn when the firm merged with the well-known Canberra firm Pamela Coward Higgins. He originally worked with the Public Interest Advocacy Centre (PIAC) in Sydney conducting large-scale product liability litigation and then spent a number of years with another national personal injury firm before joining Maurice Blackburn.
