Steve Schuurmans is the Chief Operating Officer of Maurice Blackburn and is based in our head office in Melbourne.
Steve joined Maurice Blackburn as COO in May 2007. As the deputy leader of the firm’s executive team, he works closely with the Chief Executive Officer and Board on specific projects. A builder and coach of effective teams, he also believes that the firm owes much of its success to the calibre of its lawyers and staff.
With 25 years’ experience and multiple qualifications, Steve brings a strong background in commercial and general management to the firm, together with significant skills in project management, change management, quality and risk management, office design and fit-out, OH&S, sustainability and enterprise bargaining.
Understanding the impact that enterprise-level systems and processes can have on streamlining and improving the legal business process, Steve has lead a period of significant investment in technology in his eight years with the firm. Under his operational leadership, the firm has implemented an end-to-end enterprise business management solution, comprising financial and practice management systems, together with improved front office case and matter management infrastructure. This major program of works was rolled out across more than 740 users across 28 offices – quantifiably improving the efficiency, productivity, and effectiveness of staff, systems and processes – with an easy and immediate adaption that resulted in rapid return on investment for the firm.
Prior to joining Maurice Blackburn, Steve held the same position at Minter Ellison Lawyers South Australia/Northern Territory, and before that held senior Human Resources roles in the professional services and tertiary education sectors.
