If you have been seriously injured in a road accident in Queensland you may be eligible for the National Injury Insurance Scheme (NIIS).

If you have suffered a serious injury in a motor vehicle accident you may need life-long treatment and support. The NIIS is designed to financially support those who have suffered catastrophic personal injuries in a motor vehicle accident. Maurice Blackburn Lawyers are experts in NIIS claims and can assist you with your claim.

What is the National Injury Insurance Scheme (NIIS)?

The NIIS is a scheme for anyone who has had an accident in Queensland and has sustained catastrophic personal injuries, including people who live in other states. The scheme provides lifetime treatment and care to those eligible.

Who is eligible for the NIIS?

Anyone who has sustained a serious personal injury in a road accident in Queensland after 1 July 2016 may be eligible. Injury types that are covered by the scheme include, but are not limited to:

  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Brain injuries
  • Amputations
  • Major nerve damage to an arm or other limb
  • Severe burns;
  • Blindness

There are many other injuries that may be sustained in a motor vehicle accident.

Do I have an NIIS claim?

You can make a claim directly to the NIIS once a qualified medical specialist has completed a medical certificate. Maurice Blackburn Lawyers are experts in NIIS claims and can guide you through the process and assist you with your claim, including helping determine whether you are eligible for the scheme. Contact Maurice Blackburn today to discuss your claim.

What type of accidents does the scheme cover?

Any accident that occurs on the road involving a car, truck, motorcycle, bicycle and other motor vehicles are covered.

What will the scheme pay for?

The scheme will pay for treatment and care for those eligible, including but not limited to:

  • Doctor’s appointments
  • Medication
  • Rehab
  • House modifications
  • Dental work
  • Personal care

Does the scheme affect my CTP insurance?

No it won’t. Your CTP insurance will still cover injuries in road accidents that are not catastrophic.

How is the NIIS different to the NDIS?

The NIIS is a partner scheme to the NDIS. While the NDIS supports people with an existing significant and permanent disability, the NIIS supports those who have been seriously injured in a motor vehicle accident. The NDIS is administered by the federal government while the NIIS is a state scheme.
