About Maurice Blackburn Lawyers

Who we are

We are one of Australia’s most established, successful and respected law firms, with offices throughout the country. For nearly a century, we have been fighting to win justice for those who have been treated unfairly.

We have proudly built our business on the belief that we can make a genuine difference in the lives of those who need our help.

We've been involved in many landmark Australian legal decisions, from winning the 40-hour work week case in 1948 (in conjunction with the ACTU) to achieving the largest-ever pain and suffering payout in the country for Mesothelioma victim Eric King, and a landmark breast cancer gene case to fight the patenting of human genes.

If you are facing an unfair situation, you and your family shouldn’t have to suffer alone. We never stand back when bad things happen to good people, because we believe you’re worth fighting for.

How we’re different

Maurice Blackburn has become Australia’s leading social justice law firm through its unwavering belief that the law should serve everyone, not just those who can afford it. We are the law firm for everyday Australians, not the big corporations and vested interests.

We fight with unshakeable tenacity and treat our clients with sincerity and respect. We’ve taken on big business, exposed conditions at detention centres and fought for the rights of employees, refugees and consumers. We will fight for you.

Our values

We believe that all Australians should have access to the law, and we make sure they do. We make a difference because the world isn’t always a fair place, and our clients deserve to have someone stand up for their rights. We fight with tenacity for what is fair.

Our history of championing rights

Our firm was founded in 1919 by Maurice Blackburn, a man whose sense of social justice and civil liberties was truly ahead of its time. He won cases that played a key role in establishing rights most Australians now take for granted, including the 40-hour working week, wage equality for indigenous workers, and equal pay for women.

Maurice Blackburn Lawyers has continued this proud tradition. In 2012, we won the largest class action settlement in Australian history, achieving $200 million in compensation for Centro shareholders. This is part of the more than $1billion our class action team has won in the past 15 years for consumers, shareholders and businesses.

We also successfully defended Dr Mohamed Haneef against false charges of terrorism, and fought to prevent nuclear waste dumping at Muckaty Station

Our current cases include fighting on behalf of around 160,000 people who were charged unfair fees by the big banks.

Our promise to you

At Maurice Blackburn our commitment is to you. We exist to fight for your rights, and to get you what you deserve.

We are genuine, respectful and professional, and we deliver accurate and confidential advice without unnecessary legal jargon and overblown fees.
