I have questions about the opt out notice

The Supreme Court of Victoria ordered that the opt out notice be sent by email or SMS to people who may be group members in the JB Hi-Fi Class Action. The JB Hi-Fi Class Action is about extended warranties sold with consumer goods, such as electronics and home appliances.

If you received an email from noreply@classaction.mauriceblackburn.com.au or an SMS from ClassAction about the JB Hi-Fi Class Action opt out notice, this is because JB Hi-Fi’s records show that you may have purchased an extended warranty between 1 January 2011 and 8 December 2023.

The Supreme Court of Victoria ordered that the opt out notice be published in newspapers to tell group members about the JB Hi-Fi Class Action and to let them know that they have the option to either participate or not participate in the class action.

The opt out notice was published on 2 March 2026 in the Adelaide Advertiser, The Age, The Australian, The Courier-Mail, The Canberra Times, The Mercury, The NT News, The Sydney Morning Herald, and The West Australian.

If you received the opt out notice by email or SMS, it has been sent to you to make you aware of the JB Hi-Fi Class Action, explain that you have been identified as a group member, and to let you know that you have the option to either participate or not participate in the class action.

If you do not want to participate in the class action, you must opt out via the Supreme Court of Victoria website by 29 May 2026 at 4:00pm (AEST).

It is important that you read the opt out notice carefully because it may affect your legal rights. There are many answers to frequently asked questions on this page to help you.

You are Group Member in the JB Hi-Fi Class Action if you bought an extended warranty (also known as Extended Care and Extra Care) from JB Hi-Fi in-store or online in Australia any time between 1 January 2011 and 8 December 2023.

The Supreme Court of Victoria ordered JB Hi-Fi to provide Maurice Blackburn with the contact details of people who purchased an extended warranty between 1 January 2011 and 8 December 2023 so that the opt out notice could be sent to them.

Emails and text messages are being sent between 2 March and 1 May 2026. If you haven’t received a notice yet, it might still be on the way.

JB Hi-Fi might not have collected or kept your contact details, or might have old contact details for you, so you may not receive an opt out notice.

I have questions about what I should do in response to the opt out notice

You do not need to do anything to be part of the class action.

If you purchased an extended warranty from JB Hi-Fi between 1 January 2011 and 8 December 2023, either online or in-store, you are already part of the class action. You do not need to do anything.

You are welcome to register your interest in the JB Hi-Fi Class Action to receive updates.

If you do not want to be a group member in the JB Hi-Fi Class Action, you must opt out of the class action by 29 May 2026 at 4:00pm (AEST)

To opt out, you must submit the online opt out notice at the Supreme Court of Victoria website.

If you purchased an extended warranty from JB Hi-Fi at any time between 1 January 2011 and 8 December 2023, you are a group member in the JB Hi-Fi Class Action.

If you do nothing, you will remain in the class action.

You will never be out of pocket by simply remaining a group member, regardless of the outcome of the class action.

If you ‘opt out’ of the JB Hi-Fi Class Action:

  • you will not be a group member in this class action.
  • you will not be able to claim any money or have a right to share in any benefit of any order, judgment or settlement, and you will not be bound by any settlement or judgment.
  • you may be able to bring your own claims against the defendant, if you bring the case within the time limit that applies. If you want to bring your own claims against the defendant, you should seek independent legal advice about your claims and any time limits before opting out.

No, any group member that wishes to opt out of the JB Hi-Fi Class Action must submit the online opt out notice on the Supreme Court of Victoria website.

There may be more than 8 million group members in this proceeding, and we are unable to assist individual group members with opting out. If you are having difficulties with technology, please ask a trusted family member or friend to help you.

You should not contact the Supreme Court of Victoria for advice, as the Court will be unable to assist you.

No, you are not required to register to be part of the class action.

Registering means we can send you updates about the class action directly via email. You can register to receive updates here.

You do not need to do anything right now to participate in the class action.

As a group member, your involvement is generally limited, and the Court will order Maurice Blackburn to contact group members should there be any action required for group members to participate in the class action.

We encourage you to register to receive case updates as they become available.

I have questions about the JB Hi-Fi Class Action

A class action is a legal case for seven or more people impacted by the same issue.

If wrongdoing affects a lot of people, the claims can be brought together and resolved via a single case. Class actions provide a path to justice for individuals who don't have the resources to make a claim on their own, or in a situation where people affected are not aware that they have a claim.

Maurice Blackburn is Australia’s leading class actions law firm. We have an outstanding record of helping our clients secure some of the nation’s largest class action recoveries, totalling over $5 billion since 1998.

The JB Hi-Fi Class Action relates to the extended warranties JB Hi-Fi offers customers when they buy goods such as electronics, appliances and home entertainment products.

JB Hi-Fi has sold the extended warranties in its stores and online since at least 1 January 2011. During that time, the extended warranties have also been called Extended Care or Extra Care.

The class action alleges that these extended warranties had little or no value to JB Hi-Fi’s customers, because the Australian Consumer Law already gives them the same (and often better) rights to have their goods repaired, replaced, or refunded if they are faulty, without paying for an extended warranty.

Compensation is claimed for everyone who bought an extended warranty from JB Hi-Fi between 1 January 2011 and 8 December 2023.

On 23 September 2025, the Honourable Justice Delany ordered that the initial trial of the JB Hi-Fi Class Action will begin on 5 October 2026 and will run for an estimated six weeks.

Between 2 March and 1 May 2026, group members will receive notices via email and SMS informing them about the JB Hi-Fi Class Action, and what they must do if they do not want to participate in the class action. Group members who do not want to participate must opt out by 29 May 2026 at 4:00pm AEST.

If you want to participate in the class action, you do not need to do anything right now.

You can register your interest to be kept up to date with what is happening in the class action.

Class actions usually take between 2 and 4 years.

The initial trial of the class action will begin on 5 October 2026 and will run for an estimated six weeks. The initial trial will answer key legal and factual questions, and the Court’s findings on these issues will inform how the remaining claims of group members will be dealt with.

If you register your interest in this class action, we will send you updates when important events happen.

An extended warranty extends the length of a manufacturer’s warranty. Unlike manufacturers’ warranties, which are included in the sale of the product or service, extended warranties are usually sold separately for an extra cost.

Products that JB Hi-Fi sold as extended warranties have also been called Extended Care and Extra Care at different times since 1 January 2011.

In the JB Hi-Fi Class Action, we are saying that these extended warranties were of little or no value because consumers already have the same rights for free under the Australian Consumer Law.

No. This class action is only about the extended warranties JB Hi-Fi sold to customers.

Based on the information provided by JB Hi-Fi, there may be more than 8 million group members in the class action.

To minimise costs for the benefit of all group members, Maurice Blackburn is unable to respond to any questions that are currently answered on our website.

If you have any questions about the class action, we encourage you to read through the Frequently Asked Questions on this page carefully.

I have questions about who can join the class action

If you purchased an extended warranty from JB Hi-Fi at any time between 1 January 2011 and 8 December 2023, you are already part of the JB Hi-Fi Class Action. You do not need to do anything to join.

If you would like to be kept up to date with what is happening in the JB Hi-Fi Class Action, you can register your interest here.

You do not need to have a receipt or any documentation for your extended warranty to register at this stage. If you think you bought an extended warranty from JB Hi-Fi between 1 January 2011 and 8 December 2023 but don’t have any receipts or documents for it, we encourage you to register your interest.

If you bought your extended warranty from JB Hi-Fi between 1 January 2011 and 8 December 2023, you are part of the class action, even if your extended warranty has expired.

You are part of the class action even if you claimed on your extended warranty, as long as you were not refunded the full cost of the extended warranty.

The class action is claiming compensation for all extended warranties you bought from JB Hi-Fi between 1 January 2011 and 8 December 2023.

If you register, there is an option to enter information about more than one extended warranty. You are not required to provide this information to register.

Please note that we will be unable to assist with registration enquiries until after the opt out deadline on 29 May 2026.

This class action is against JB Hi-Fi, so it is limited to extended warranties bought from JB Hi-Fi, either in-store or online.

Maurice Blackburn is running another class action about extended warranties sold by Harvey Norman, Domayne and Joyce Mayne.

Read more about the Harvey Norman extended warranty class action.

Unfortunately, you are not eligible to be part of this class action if you bought your extended warranty outside of Australia.

The JB Hi-Fi Class Action alleges that extended warranties purchased between 1 January 2011 and 8 December 2023 had little or no value because customers already had the same rights for free under Australian Consumer Law. These rights are only available to consumers in Australia.

Unfortunately, you are not eligible to be part of this class action if you bought your extended warranty before 1 January 2011. This is because the law the case is based on, the Australian Consumer Law, did not come into effect until 1 January 2011.

Unfortunately, you are not eligible to be part of this class action if you bought your extended warranty after 8 December 2023. This is because the class action represents consumers who purchased extended warranties up until the date on which the proceedings were filed in the Supreme Court of Victoria.

This class action does not include JB Hi-Fi’s Mobile Extras plans.

JB Hi-Fi Mobile Extras is a membership you can buy when you purchase some mobile devices at JB Hi-Fi. It gives customers access to things like technical support, security software and cloud storage.

This class action does not cover Mobile Extras plans, so if you only bought one of these plans, it is not included in this class action.

However, any extended warranties, known as Extended Care or Extra Care, which were purchased with mobile and tablet devices from JB Hi-Fi between 1 January 2011 and 8 December 2023, are covered by this class action.

If you are unsure if you bought an extended warranty from JB Hi-Fi between the 1 January 2011 and 8 December 2023, we encourage you to register your interest for the JB Hi-Fi Class Action so you can stay up to date with developments in the class action.

If a person purchased an extended warranty from JB Hi-Fi at any time between 1 January 2011 and 8 December 2023, they are already part of the JB Hi-Fi Class Action and do not need to do anything to join.

You can register on behalf of an eligible group member only if you have express authority to do so. Register here.

Costs and compensation

You will never be asked to pay anything out of your own pocket by participating in the class action.

Costs will only be payable if:

  1. the case is settled; or
  2. there is a trial and we win the case.

Any legal costs payable to Maurice Blackburn will be deducted from the amount of compensation recovered for the group members through any successful settlement or judgment. If there are costs payable to JB Hi-Fi the law requires Maurice Blackburn to pay these.

The Court oversees and approves the final legal costs at the end of the proceeding.

You will not have to pay any out-of-pocket costs regardless of the outcome.

Read more about class action costs.

Compensation is claimed for everyone who bought an extended warranty from JB Hi-Fi between 1 January 2011 and 8 December 2023.

We cannot predict how much compensation money group members may receive. It’s likely to be different from person to person, depending on the number and price of extended warranties they purchased.

The Supreme Court of Victoria has made a group costs order (GCO) in this proceeding.

The GCO means if there is a successful outcome in the JB Hi-Fi Class Action, any legal costs payable to Maurice Blackburn will be calculated as a fixed percentage (30%) of the total money we recover for everyone in the class action, rather than being calculated using time-based billing.

More information about how costs will be paid is in the Funding Information Summary Statement.
