Frequently asked questions
The class action was started in 2017 in the Federal Court by Ms Simpson, represented by Maurice Blackburn Lawyers.
The class action claimed that, between 28 March 2011 and 29 March 2017, Radio Rentals' customers in every state except South Australia paid too much for their Rent Try $1 Buy rentals. It also claimed that Radio Rentals did not tell customers about all the costs and some terms of the rental were unfair.
Radio Rentals and its insurance company agreed to pay money for refunds to Rent Try $1 Buy customers, without admitting liability. The settlement was approved as fair and reasonable by the Federal Court on 20 December 2019.
Only Group Members who registered with Maurice Blackburn received a refund.
The settlement has now concluded and no further payments will be made.
If you received correspondence from Maurice Blackburn that your refund payment failed, and you updated your bank details before 1 May 2020, Maurice Blackburn attempted to make your refund payment a second time.
The settlement has now concluded and no further payments will be made.
Maurice Blackburn made refund payments using the bank account details provided by you at the time you registered. We recommend that you check the bank account details you provided and contact your bank.
There is nothing we can do to retrieve a payment that has been identified as successfully processed. Group Members were informed of this at registration.
Refunds were calculated using the method set out in the Settlement Distribution Scheme approved by the Federal Court of Australia. Each group member received an equal percentage of the money they paid to Radio Rentals under Rent Try $1 Buy Contracts (a pro rata calculation). The more money a person paid to Radio Rentals, the larger their refund was.
