Jacinta Lewin

Jacinta Lewin is a Principal Lawyer in the social justice practice of Maurice Blackburn's Melbourne office. She is the former Chair of the Law Institute of Victoria’s Human Rights Committee and active member of the Law Council of Australia Human Rights Committee. Jacinta holds a Bachelor of Creative Arts and a Bachelor of Laws with Honours. She joined Maurice Blackburn in 2009.

Jacinta is passionate about using the law to create change and achieve meaningful outcomes for her clients. She enjoys making the law accessible to everyday people.

Her main practice areas are administrative law, human rights law, and complex tort litigation. She was previously the National Practice Manager of Maurice Blackburn's Comcare Practice. Jacinta has also worked as a senior legal advisor at the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission (VEOHRC).

Jacinta's combination of experience, skill and empathy is evident in the consistency of the results she obtains. She has litigated numerous successful cases in the Administrative Appeals Tribunal, Federal Court, and High Court of Australia. She has also led legal interventions under the Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities Act 2006 (Vic).

Her work has a strategic and collaborative focus with a view to achieving systemic outcomes in complex areas of law. "I am drawn to working within challenging legal areas where high-quality practitioners are needed to test the boundaries of the law to help my clients access their full rights,” says Jacinta.

“Whether we are working on issues of discrimination, workers’ rights, or refugee law, it is important that we work hard to achieve the best possible outcomes. I am incredibly fortunate to work on cases with a team focused on creating long-lasting change, not just for the client at the centre of the case, but also for our community.”

Jacinta's recent legal cases include: 

  • Acting for refugees and asylum seekers in urgent injunctions and negligence cases to obtain medical care and compensation in the Federal and High Court
  • Representing Freedom of Information applicants in public interest cases
  • Acting for the Fertility Control Clinic in the High Court Challenge to Safe Access Zone laws (Clubb v Edwards and Anor [2019] HCA 11)
  • Advising AFLW players on their employment rights
  • Representing Danila Dilba Health Services to appeal liquor licensing decisions
  • Challenging irresponsible lending practices
  • Acting against airlines in discrimination matters

Jacinta also actively works and volunteers in the policy space. She holds several leadership positions in the legal profession. She is passionate about her clients, collaboration, and innovative models of achieving social justice.
