Joshua never expected a routine health check to change his life. The 54-year-old operator and rigger had spent decades working in the mining industry, including at the bauxite mines in Weipa. Like many workers across Far North Queensland, he worked hard to provide for his family and build a secure future.

But in 2024, a routine medical screening revealed something was wrong.

A chest X-ray showed an abnormality. Further testing confirmed Joshua had silicosis and progressive massive fibrosis (PMF), a serious and irreversible occupational lung disease caused by breathing in hazardous dust over time.

The diagnosis came as a complete shock. Joshua had spent years working in dusty conditions but says he was never properly warned about the long-term dangers dust exposure could pose to his health.

"I was not warned about the dangers of breathing in dust, or that it could be a risk to my health."

Today, Joshua is living with the reality of a disease that will affect him for the rest of his life. After his diagnosis, he was stood down from work and left facing uncertainty about both his health and financial future.

"Once all of this news eventually started to sink in, I had so many questions about work, my health and my future. It was very worrying.

When the lung damage is already done

Silicosis is caused by inhaling very fine particles of crystalline silica dust, often found in mining, construction, and manufacturing industries. Over time, the dust can become trapped in the lungs, causing inflammation and permanent scarring that makes it harder to breathe.

PMF is an advanced form of dust disease that can develop in people with silicosis. It causes extensive lung damage and can significantly impact quality of life.

One of the most concerning aspects of silicosis is that many workers have few, if any, symptoms in the early stages.

Like many others diagnosed with dust disease, Joshua felt reasonably well before his screening identified the problem. By the time the disease was detected, the damage to his lungs could not be reversed.
