Emily graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Arts and Honours in Law in 2007. She is passionate, down-to-earth and enjoys connecting with her community and providing access to justice. Within the broad medical negligence field, Emily’s main practice areas are obstetrics, Coronial matters and mental health.
"I wanted to work with people on real life problems, and to help them navigate a sometimes confusing and stressful system," says Emily.
"I enjoy seeing how a person’s life can change when they receive compensation that will act as a safety net for the rest of their life.
"It's empowering to see the incredible strength of our clients, and the amazing support they have from their families and communities.
"I experienced someone in my family being hurt, and saw how much of an impact that had across all areas of our family's life. The hardest part was not knowing where to get answers or what was going to happen. Now I help other people get the answers they need.
"I really believe in strengthening people, systems and communities, which is something I am involved in as part of the medical negligence team through working on Coronial cases to shape the health system, and through our firm’s association with the HeLP clinic."
Emily's easy-to-understand use of language, combined with her empathy, passion about access to justice and strong will to fight for clients resulted in her being named a nominee in the 2012 Women Lawyers Achievement Award Victoria. Since then, Emily has gone on to be part of the team to establish the HeLP clinic, where she now manages a team of lawyers at the Alfred Hospital, providing a free triage legal service for patients and their families twice per week.
Emily doesn't stop being a lawyer when she walks out of her office. She was a founding member and co-chair of the Victorian Women Lawyers' Law Reform Committee and was also a member of the VWL Executive for four years. Emily holds leadership positions within Maurice Blackburn, and she is also passionate about mentoring young lawyers.
