Maurice Blackburn Lawyers, which represents abuse survivors in Western Australia and across the country, said the report tabled in the WA Parliament today was an important step for survivors.
Hugo Seymour, an associate in abuse law at Maurice Blackburn, said:
“We commend the committee for carrying out a thorough yet timely review and putting forward some commonsense recommendations that will immediately help survivors of abuse.
“Our clients live with serious mental health issues connected to the trauma of their abuse.
“The recommendations of this inquiry will help survivors access justice sooner, and avoid them being further traumatised by a drawn out litigation process.
“Recommendations such as prioritising Freedom of Information requests relating to institutional child sexual abuse will make an enormous difference in helping survivors resolve their legal claims sooner.
“We also welcome the recommendations to improve support services for survivors.
“We note the report’s comments about the failure of the Christian Brothers to cooperate with the inquiry, and that their experience echoes the difficulty survivors have faced for many years when dealing with the Brothers.
“Maurice Blackburn welcomes this final report from the Community Development and Justice Standing Committee, and we look forward to the Government’s response.”
