Julian Schimmel

Julian Schimmel is a Principal Lawyer in Maurice Blackburn's class actions department in Sydney and is currently responsible for the Volkswagen, Audi and Skoda class actions on behalf of consumers arising from the international “dieselgate” emissions issue.

Practice Area
Class actions

Julian has broad ranging experience across different areas of class actions practice, however he has particular expertise in conducting complex product liability and other product related claims.

Julian has concluded two class actions in the Federal Court of Australia for patients who were implanted with two different types of orthopaedic joint replacement devices that were alleged to be faulty.  The ASR hip implants class action was launched in February 2011 and has been Australia’s largest product liability class action.  In March 2016 the parties agreed on a settlement of the class action for $250 million, with the Federal Court of Australia approving the settlement in June 2016. The settlement is the largest class action settlement in the Federal Court of Australia and overall the third largest class action settlement in Australian legal history.

The LCS Duofix knee implants class action was settled in August 2012, with the Federal Court of Australia approving the settlement in December 2012 and many patients since receiving payments under the settlement regime.

Julian has also worked on several large shareholder class actions, most recently helping to secure $39.5 million in compensation for 1,300 AWB shareholders who were alleged to have been misled about the company's involvement in the oil-for-food kickback scandal. Julian has also worked on a shareholder class action against OZ Minerals and a cartel class action against Amcor/Visy.  Julian also initiated and worked on a class action against the NSW Government over the false imprisonment of children by police, which later settled and resulted in compensation being paid to many children.

Before joining Maurice Blackburn in December 2007, Julian had four years’ experience as a criminal defence lawyer at the Aboriginal Legal Service in Redfern and Wollongong.  He also previously worked as a lawyer at the New South Wales Crown Solicitor's Office and also spent two years working at the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
