Maurice Blackburn CEO Jacob Varghese said the commendation was just recognition of both Ms Hussain and Ms Ahilas for their dedicated commitment to providing access to justice for Australians of all backgrounds over many years.

“Our firm is incredibly proud of both Azmeena and Theodora, who have been recognised for their tremendous service to the community and to our profession,” Mr Varghese said.

“Both have always been driven to ensure a fairer and more equal Australia, whether that’s as fierce advocates for their clients or in championing the rights of under-served and under-represented groups in the community.

“On behalf of Maurice Blackburn I want to congratulate both Azmeena and Theodora – we feel very lucky and grateful to have had them within our firm and are thrilled to see this well-deserved recognition of their significant role in improving the lives of everyday Australians,” he said.

Azmeena Hussain
Azmeena Hussain is a Principal at Maurice Blackburn Lawyers who is committed to advancing equality, social inclusion and access to justice for all. Azmeena has served in a range of advocacy roles within the multicultural, sporting and broader community including as the current Chair and Director of the Islamic Museum of Australia, a Director of Football Victoria and former Advisor to the Minister for Crime Prevention and governance roles within the domestic violence sector.

Theodora Ahilas
Theodora Ahilas served as a powerful advocate for people living with the debilitating consequences of dust diseases for more than three decades, including being involved in ground-breaking litigation for people of non-English speaking backgrounds who were exposed to silica dust. She was also a tireless volunteer, providing pro bono legal assistance to the Marrickville Legal Centre, the Ethnic Communities Council and the criminal division of Legal Aid. She remains one of the most widely recognised experts in the practice of asbestos and occupational disease law in Australia. Theodora retired from Maurice Blackburn in 2020, after more than 16 years with the firm.
