Update: surgeon's registration suspended

You may have seen recent news coverage reporting that Dr Liu-Ming Schmidt's registration has been suspended.

The NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal has found Dr Liu-Ming Schmidt guilty of professional misconduct and unsatisfactory professional conduct. In its decision of 17 July 2026, the Tribunal suspended her registration for six months and placed conditions on her registration once that period ends.

The complaint, brought by the Health Care Complaints Commission, concerned Dr Schmidt's surgical management of a number of patients between 2016 and 2022 while she worked at Albury Wodonga Health, including patients who had undergone a colonoscopy.

If you were treated by Dr Schmidt during this period, the information below still applies to you. If you believe you were affected, contact our medical negligence team now for a free, no-obligation discussion of your options.

We understand there are approximately 2,000 patients who may be affected. In the majority of cases, the risk to patients is low. It is still important to contact your treatment provider as soon as possible if you had a colonoscopy performed or supervised by Dr Liu-Ming Schmidt after 1 January 2016 from the following health services:

  • Albury Wodonga Health
  • Albury Wodonga Private Hospital
  • Insight Private Hospital (located at The Gardens Medical Centre)

Safer Care Victoria initiated a recall process to contact everyone affected and reassess their treatment. Read more about the recall on the Safer Care Victoria website.
